Strata (2025)
40’ x 8.5’ x 10’
Strata (2025) is a deep time capsule, using live climate data to simulate humanity’s impact on the planet.
Using spatial cinema to draw inspiration from the geological time spiral, the sculpture’s mountain-like forms of light and image reflect the forces shaping the natural and unnatural world.
At its center, a mirrored sphere pulls viewers into the scene, symbolizing humanity’s role in nature. Powered by the city’s climate data on its screens, the work generates real-time simulations of wind and water, with weather updates influencing the lighting, trajectory, and speed of fluid and particle patterns in constant flux.
Persistent data, such as the number of trees planted in Mesa, introduces new flora into the environment, creating a living ecosystem. As the climate evolves, so will Strata—a perpetual reflection of humanity’s interconnectedness with the environment.
